More than 140 Buckeyes rode to the Buckeye Bike Hub on September 26 to explore sustainable transportation options, enjoy free bike tune-ups, bike locks, helmets, giveaways and more.
“The Buckeye Bike Hub is a great place to make sure your bike is safe and you have the right equipment like helmets and locks,” said Andrew Neil, assistant director for sustainability at Facilities Operations and Development (FOD). “Making the decision to bike around campus has a lot of health benefits and opens the door to create social connections. “
Several departments including Transportation and Traffic Management (TTM), Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Facilities Operations and Development (FOD), partnered with the Office of Student Life Recreational Sports to make the event a success.
"One of our core values at the bike hub is bike safety for all Buckeyes," said Nick Pangio, coordinator of Recreational Sports. "The staff, made up of all Ohio State students, enjoyed the opportunity to interact with our Ohio State community to promote and provide some practical bike safety awareness as well as hands on repairs. We hope to provide more opportunities for our community to come together in the future."
“It’s important that people are able to get where they need to be in the safest manner possible,” said John Shrader, field logistics coordinator for TTM. “So, it’s exciting to be part of events like this that promote bicycle safety and celebrate bicycle transportation.”
Several OSUPD officers were in attendance to hand out free helmets. “We encourage students to take advantage of these free bike locks and secure their bicycles whenever possible,” said Lt. Bruce Allen. “Safety is our top priority so we’re happy to be promoting cycling safety and passing out free helmets.”
